Sharjah's 2nd Flower and Garden Exhibition opened yesterday - amid praise from both exhibitors and visitors.
The week-long exhibition aims to create cultural awareness of landscaping. Some 70 companies took part in the event which kicked off with Sharjah schoolchildren performing poetry and plays.
"This is the first time I have attended this exhibition. It is great to see the varieties of flowers from other countries. Our stall deals in bonsai trees that take 10 to 20 years to grow. It is good we can display them for people to see," Yani Wang, on the Quebec Trading Stall said.
"This exhibition is wonderful for our business. We wish we could have more than one exhibition per year. We have a lot to show but nowhere to show it. I hope the government will give us more chances to display our flowers," Ren Xie, of the Dreamland Nursery said.
Manager of the Gulf commercial stall, Yunus Aziz, said he had many expectations for this year's exhibition. "We deal in fertiliser from America which has been in the Gulf for more than 10 years yet but not many people are aware of it. This exhibition will allow us to educate the public about our product," he said.
Visitors were also keen to express their satisfaction with this year's exhibition. "This is my second time at Sharjah's Flower Exhibition and I am very pleased with what they have done this year. There is more of a selection and it is good for Sharjah," Ahmad Al Maliki, a businessman from Dubai said.
"This is wonderful. The children love it and there is so much to see. We came by accident into the park and found this and we are very grateful," Reem Shihzad, a tourist said.
"You can tell by the VIPs who have come this year that the exhibition is growing in reputation. I hope next year will be even better," Saber Hamdi, a government employee in Sharjah said.
Awards were given to residents with the best gardens, after Sharjah municipality set up a committee to evaluate gardens across Sharjah. Special prizes worth Dh45,000 were handed out to visitors attending the exhibition. Awards for excellent performance were later given to municipality staff, including truck drivers and gardeners.
The event was opened by Shaikh Khalid Bin Abdullah Al Qassimi, Chairman of Sharjah Sea Ports and Customs at the Majaz Park.
