Sharjah: Major General Saif Al Ziri Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, has directed the police departments to provide adequate housing to 280 workers.
The initiative is part of the department’s keenness to fulfil its responsibility towards society, maintaining security and ensuring stability and the safety of both, citizens as well as expatriates.
This action was taken after a call was made on Thursday to Sharjah TV live programme [Direct Line], stating that there was a group of workers residing in a building under construction in one of the emirate’s industrial areas. These workers were living under difficult circumstances due to the coronavirus pandemic, job losses and the hot weather.
Major General Al Shamsi indicated that the competent authorities of Sharjah Police were immediately instructed to provide adequate housing for these workers in one of its centres, providing them with decent amenities and assuring that they stayed safe and healthy, in line with the precautionary measures that have been put in place to counter the coronavirus pandemic.
Major General Al Shamsi praised the efforts made by the Sharjah Charity Association and its active contribution in terms of speed of response and the effort to provide necessary support in an emergency situation.
Al Shamsi stated that the authorities concerned immediately communicated with the respective Consulate Generals and coordinated with them about the mechanism to be followed to ensure speedy return of the workers to their home countries, or amendment of their status in accordance with UAE residency laws.
The initiative of the Sharjah Police General Command is in keeping with its positive role in highlighting human values and promoting solidarity and compassion among all segments of society.
