Greek culture welcomed in Sharjah, celebrating shared roots and contemporary creativity
Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), has praised Greece as a cornerstone of human creativity and cultural influence. Her remarks came during a signing ceremony announcing Greece as the Guest of Honour for the 44th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), held at the Thessaloniki International Exhibition & Congress Centre.
“Greece, with its profound legacy—from Homer’s epics to Socratic ideals—continues to inspire scholars and writers around the world,” she said. “Sharjah’s cultural vision, guided by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, champions dialogue and exchange. Greece’s participation invites us to explore the shared roots of global storytelling.”
The agreement was signed by Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of SBA, and Jasonas Fotilas, Greece’s Deputy Minister of Culture. Sheikha Bodour highlighted that SBA aims to make SIBF 2025 a landmark event, showcasing a civilisation that, alongside the Arab world, has shaped humanity’s collective heritage.
“SIBF is where global cultures intersect,” she added. “Hosting Greece reinforces the fair’s mission to honour the past while fostering meaningful engagement with the world.”
Al Ameri said the collaboration with Greece builds on Sharjah’s commitment to cultural exchange: “Each edition of SIBF opens new intellectual horizons. Hosting Greece is a valuable opportunity to connect with one of history’s most influential cultures.”
Deputy Minister Fotilas noted that Greece’s participation stems from strong bilateral ties and years of cultural collaboration: “Our programme at SIBF 2025 will celebrate Greek literature, philosophy, arts and gastronomy, offering visitors a vibrant window into our heritage.”
As Guest of Honour, Greece will present a diverse lineup of cultural and literary events—ranging from classical philosophy and theatre to modern literature and music. The programme will feature top Greek authors, artists, and publishers, as well as exhibits and workshops that showcase the richness of Greek civilisation and its impact on the world.
