Abu Dhabi: An Indian expat in the UAE died after suffering an electric shock while cleaning an air conditioner at his home in the south Indian district of Kerala on Saturday, according to his family.

The deceased, Anvar TA, 43, was an employee of a shipping company in Abu Dhabi. He is survived by his wife Shabana and two school-going children, Ishana and Aadil.

He had returned to his hometown of Puthenchira in Thrissur district just 10 days ago for vacation.

Wedding trip

“Usually, he comes home every six months and stays for long. But, this time, he was on a visit to attend a relative’s wedding,” Anvar’s relative and panchayat ward member V.A. Nadeer told Gulf News over the phone.

He said the tragic incident occurred around 1pm on Saturday.

Anvar was reportedly electrocuted while cleaning the fan of the air conditioner at his home.

Shock on rooftop

“I was passing by his home when I heard that he was lying unconscious. Apparently, he got an electric shock while cleaning the outdoor unit of the air conditioner, which was installed on the rooftop above the porch of his house,” said Nadeer.

He said Shabana was standing next to Anvar when the tragedy struck. “She managed to release him [from the AC unit] using something she found there. Unfortunately, he still collapsed on her lap.”

Attempts to revive

Though some among the family members and neighbours who rushed to the rooftop gave CPR and rushed him to the hospital, Anvar could not be revived.

He is scheduled to be laid to rest on Sunday morning after his sister arrives from Bahrain, said Nadeer.

Anvar’s brother and family living in Dubai were already home for the wedding, he added.
