Sharjah: UAE-based non-profit organisation Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP) recently launched its eighth annual ‘I Deserve a Life’ Ramadan Zakat campaign, aimed at raising funds to help cancer patients who cannot afford the high cost of treatment.

The campaign will have online options to enable donors to make their contributions remotely, in light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The campaign, which was first launched in 2013, has so far collected Dh6.854 million and supported treatment for 1,320 patients, including their chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgical procedures and other urgent expenses during the early stages of treatment and care.

Over Dh1.839 million was collected last year benefiting 335 patients, according to FocP.

Thankful benecifiaries

“Many of the patients have recovered and gone on to lead normal productive lives. Others who required long-term treatment and support were also given loving care till they recovered fully and were rehabilitated,” FoCP said in a statement.

One of the patients, Abdullah, an 18-year-old Emirati and long-term cancer patient who was supported by FOCP, said: “I started my journey with FoCP when I was eight years old. FOCP’s role during my treatment was remarkable. They even facilitated my Umrah trip which gave me so much joy as I experienced the house of God. I shall forever be grateful to FoCP and the people who have contributed to its Zakat fund for the incredible service and immense hope they have given to patients like me.”
