Ras Al Khaimah: An Asian woman and her young daughter drowned on Wednesday afternoon off the beach at Al Jazeera Al Hamra, a police official said.

Police investigations confirmed the woman, 23, committed suicide and took her three- year-old daughter into the sea with her. The woman’s husband said earlier that day his wife had phoned him at work and threatened to drown herself and their daughter. He arrived in time to see his wife clutching his daughter and walking into the sea but he managed to persuade her to go home with him.

He thought he had calmed her down and she claimed to have abandoned her suicide bid so he decided to return to work. However, on his return he started to have doubts his wife had meant what she said and decided to return to the family home — when he found the house empty he raised the alarm and a search was instigated. Neighbours and a security guard helped him look and it was the guard who discovered the two bodies on the beach. The woman’s shocked husband collapsed at the scene.

Brigadier Abdullah Khamis Al Hadidi, director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), said the operations room received a call at 2.30pm saying two bodies had been washed ashore by the current. Their bodies were transferred to the forensic laboratory for an autopsy, Brig Al Hadidi added.

The woman’s husband told police that his wife had tried to commit suicide on numerous occasions, once she set herself on fire but he managed to rescue her.

Police investigations revealed that the couple had been having marital problems for a long time.

Medical reports and a police investigation confirmed it was suicide.

Brig Al Hadidi urged people to solve their disputes rationally by talking to each other and not to take their life, which is against Islam and the law. He said the woman’s husband was suffering psychologically due to losing both his wife and child and now needs medical care.
