Sharjah: After a gruelling four days of intermittent power cuts, residents of Sharjah heaved a sigh of relief as power returned on Thursday, in most areas.

The worst affected places, such as the industrial areas where electricity was off for more than 70 hours, finally had it restored on Thursday morning.

The power cuts covered a vast area, including densely populated districts as Al Nahda, Al Wahda, Al Majjarah, Al Qasimia, Al Rolla and Abu Shagara, disrupting the daily life of thousands of residents.

Many businesses were hit badly too and some owners are now not taking chances and plan to install high voltage generators. Power was out since Sunday in parts of the huge free zone, which has a number of vital industries. However it was also restored to this area early on Thursday morning.

Residents say they’re upset at Sewa’s (Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority’s) “head in the sand” attitude and the fact that it kept them in suspense; not knowing if and when the power would be cut.

Many were without water as a result of the cuts.
