SHARJAH A Sharjah couple are desperately seeking help for their son born with a rare congenital condition.

Baby Ngomsu, who underwent an operation on April 10 - two days after he was born in an Ajman hospital with oesophageal atresia or a blocked food pipe - returned home for the first time only last week.

However, father Marcel Youfang, 39, from Cameroon, says his woes are not over as he still has to raise Dh68,000, an amount for which he issued post-dated cheques to pay the hospital in order to have his baby discharged. “I had no money left and to bring my baby home, I had to issue post-dated cheques. Now if I don’t ensure the amount in my account, I can be held liable for bounced cheques,” says Youfang who makes about Dh3,500 in a cargo shipping firm in Dubai.

Currently Baby Ngozu has to be fed through a pipe for at least six months before another corrective surgery is performed on him. “That means more expenses and I am already at my wits’ end thinking about my current struggles,” says Youfang. Oesophagectomy – surgical removal of all or part of the foodpipe – on Baby Ngomsu cost the family Dh16,000. Besides this, the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit charges came to over Dh40,000.

“He arrived normally like every baby, but unfortunately he can’t swallow anything. He needs another surgery soon. But we lack money and the bill is far beyond our possibilities. Please help us,” pleads mother Genevy, 22. The couple must arrange the money this month.
