An aluminium foil plant to be built in Iran is considered not only a major import-substitution project, but also one that will have a market on this side of the Gulf. The project is being promoted by Hezar Aluminium Industries Co as a joint venture with a foreign partner.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed with an Italian company. The venture will be called Hezar Aluminium Foil Factory (Haff) and will be located in Kerman province.

Haff is expected to create 500 jobs. It is scheduled to be built within 28 months on 11.5 hectares 25 kilometres from the southeastern city of Kerman. The plant's raw aluminium ingots will be supplied by Bandar Abbas-based Al Mahdi aluminium project and by Arak's Iralco factories.

The plant will produce about 35,000 tonnes of foil in the first year. Its capacity will ultimately double. Thirty per cent of the production will be exported. "The construction of Hezar Aluminium Foil factory in Kerman will enable Iran to be self-sufficient in aluminium foil.

"The factory will enable Iran in less than three years to save $60 million currently being spent on imports," Managing Director Ahmad Reza Haghshenas said. The project is being promoted in the UAE by Dubai-based Sirjanco Trading LLC, its General Manager Reza Dana said.
