Abu Dhabi Police have issued a set of guidelines for motorists travelling with children.
An Interior Ministry statement said the basic rule of driving is concentration. Hence parents should prevent children from standing in the car or shouting and distracting the driver.
Children should not sit in the front seat. They should be seated in the back and secured with a seat belt.
The instructions were issued as part of a campaign for a nationwide ban on children in the front seat. The ban will take effect in January.
The statement says, "The main aim of the law is to stop children under the age of 10 from sitting in the front seat. Children should be seated in the back because in case of an accident, they will not smash against the windscreen or the dashboard. The front seat then acts like a shield.
"People breaking the law will be punished."
Mothers must not let children sit in their laps because they may get hurt if it is necessary to brake suddenly.
The statement also urges parents not to let children be supervised by older siblings. "If you are driving, put the child in the back seat and secure him with a seat belt. Do not let an elder child supervise him."
