Model schools are leading by example, according to Dr Ali Abdul Aziz Al Sharhan, Minister of Education and Youth, and have set high educational standards. "These schools are the modern example of government schools. We want these types of schools to spread throughout our education system," the minister said in a press statement.

There is an increasing number of these schools in the UAE. "They are good for education in the Gulf and the Arab world. The model schools are the focus of the Arab region," he said. These model schools have implemented their aims. "This was possible because of a joint effort by federal institutions, local governments and parents who felt that these schools are a good alternative to private schools.

"Model schools have been very successful and could be a substitute for private schools." The minister said the Ministry of Education is following an expansion plan to increase the number of model schools so that everyone has access to them. "These schools have special characteristics which aim to raise the UAE student on Islamic and national values. It teaches the student to work as a team and to be a leader from childhood.

"The students are taught to master many skills. The schools aim to develop the child in all aspects." Extra-curricular activities are given importance and talented students are encouraged to hone their skills. "Be it arts or sports, they are encouraged to be creative and excel," Al Sharhan said.
