Military training for summer camp students suggested
A UAE official has recommended to include military training among activities geared for students during the summer.
Abdul Aziz Al Naqbi, Director of the Youth Club (Muntada Al Shabab) in the Eastern Region, yesterday said the club's summer programme this year was very successful.
"Over 650 schoolboys joined the activities, which comprised courses in swimming, computer, Arabic calligraphy and martial arts," Al Naqbi said.
Students from Kalba, Khor Fakkan and Dibba Al Hisn joined the programme. He pointed out that military exercises, which the club introduced last summer, have seen growing demand among young men.
The exercises were organised in cooperation with special security forces. They aim to teach boys self-defence and raise their fitness level. They also learn the values of discipline and commitment and develop patriotism, the official said.
He explained that the students were divided into four groups according to their age and physical abilities. The training covered infantry exercises, military saluting and lining up, in addition to shooting.
Al Naqbi suggested including military training in the extracurricular programme of schools.
The military uniform, which the students were required to wear during the training, gave them a sense of courage and responsibility, he said. Such exercises in addition to martial arts enhance the sports programmes geared to young men in the summer.
Other activities such as diving and yacht sailing also attracted many students.
"We are also keen on offering Holy Quran memorisation classes in the programme to increase their religious comprehension and commitment to Islamic morals," Al Naqbi said.
He said summer programmes enable students to acquire new skills and protect them from deviant behaviour.
Al Naqbi praised the attention given by His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to youth developmental projects which help them utilise their holidays in useful activities.
Meanwhile, the club organised a special celebration on Tuesday to mark the 36th Accession Day. Many students participated in the event which reflected their deep affection for the country and the leader.
