Ras Al Khaimah: The first membrane sewage treatment plant for Masafi Village was commissioned this week. Until now, the village, which lies near Ras Al Khaimah, had been dependant on sewage tanker trucks.
The new local treatment facility will serve a population of 2,000 people. It will be fully completed in four months under a joint venture between the Al Ghurair group and Hitachi.
The waste-water treatment plant uses Hitachi's Membrane Bio Reactor (MBR) technology. It will process 500 cubic metres each day.
The sewage treatment process requires less energy and will improve on the quality of water that can be safely used for irrigation and other industrial applications in Masafi.
Al Ghurair and Hitachi have already established a joint company for recycling water in the UAE. The project utilises the same technology for industrial water as the one used in Al Quoz, Dubai.
"We also want to value our natural resources and hence want to introduce an environmentally friendly highly advanced technology for waste water treatment in the area", said Eisa Al Gurair, chairman of Al Ghurair Foods.
Masafi residents depended on sewage tankers to transport waste from the village to a remote sewage treatment plant. Tankers also supply the village's water needs, including well water for irrigation purposes.
