Ajman: An Arab man sustained serious burns after a gas cylinder exploded in his car in Al Hamidyah area in Ajman on Sunday night.

Major Majid Ali Al Hassan, acting director of Ajman Civil Defence, said the operations room received a call at around 11.21pm saying that a massive explosion had occurred in a car near Al Nakheel hypermarket. Police patrols, a fire tender as well as an ambulance were dispatched to the scene and controlled the blaze.

Maj Al Hassani said the gas cylinder was in the boot of the car when it exploded, causing the car to burst into flames.

The motorist, who was driving his car when the cylinder exploded, was taken to Khalifa hospital for treatment.

The site was handed over to police forensic experts to determine the cause of the blast.

Maj Al Hassani appealed to all motorists to avoid transporting gas cylinders inside vehicles.
