Part of the new Dubai road network system connecting Jebel Ali with Sharjah Industrial Area No 5 through Mirdiff, Ghusais and Aweer will open to traffic today.
The Dh819 million ring road was constructed by Dubai Municipality to reduce traffic congestion on the Dubai-Sharjah road and provide Dubai with better access to other emirates.
Nasser Ahmed Saeed, Director of the Roads Department, said, "The main advantage is the immediate reduction of traffic congestion, especially on major roads such as Al Ittihad Road which connects Dubai with Sharjah. This new network will also reduce congestion all the way through to Sheikh Zayed Road.
"The new road is 50 kilometres long and extends all the way to Jebel Ali Road Roundabout to the main gate of Jebel Ali Port.
"Arterial roads also connect it to the industrial areas, including Al Ghusais, Al Aweer and Al Quoz."
The Dubai ring road's first and second phase, linking residential and industrial areas, is 50 kilometres long and connects the Dubai-Al Ain road to Sharjah and Jebel Ali.
The first phase, which began in 1998, was divided into three parts. The first part, constituting six kilometres of the ring road with two interchanges, linked Sharjah with Al Nahda Road in Al Ghusais. It includes three bridges.
The second part consisted of building five kilometres of road with three interchanges, extending from Al Khawaneej Road to Al Ramool Road. It includes 11 bridges.
The third part which was 11 kilometres long and has three interchanges including 20 bridges, extends from Al Aweer Road to Dubai-Al Ain Road. The construction is still underway.
The second phase connecting Dubai-Al Ain Road with Jebel Ali's Lehbab Road is 28 kilometres long. In addition, four link roads leading to Jebel Ali Free Zone, Al Barsha, Al Quoz Industrial areas and Dubai Investment Park, were also constructed as part of this phase.
Saeed said: "All the trucks will now be using only the ring road. Because of this, 25 per cent of the traffic will be reduced on these main roads."
Heavy trucks will be banned on all city roads during peak hours.
The third phase is currently under implementation, and entails the construction of 16 kilometres of road which connects Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road with Abu Dhabi. This is scheduled for completion by December next year.
