The Gulf for Good's Charity Kilimanjaro trek team was given indepth information by the Welcare Hospital on the serious health problems they may encounter during their climb. Dr Abdul Rahman Mohammed, consultant in Accidents and Emergencies, discussed two potentially life-threatening conditions that affect climbers: high-altitude sickness and pulmonary oedema.

Prevention is always better than cure, he said, and advised climbers that they should walk slowly, allowing their bodies to adjust gradually to the thin air at high altitudes. Advice on how to deal with sprained ankles was given by Gary Palmer, chief physiotherapist.

A lively chat on diet and nutrition was given by Maria Anne Gerstner, head nurse in the accident and emergency ward. She recommended an adequate liquid and carbohydrate intake.

Jude Milner, promotional executive for Welcare Hospital said, "We are delighted to assist with this project. When you compare our standard of healthcare in the UAE with that in Africa you realise that we must do everything to help them."
