Certain types of transport have always attracted youths who see a romanticism in speed and thrills. Bikes have a particular appeal.
Certain types of transport have always attracted youths who see a romanticism in speed and thrills. Bikes have a particular appeal. In the United Arab Emirates the lure of quad bikes is obvious.
Some sand dunes look too tempting, just too good to pass without revving up the gears. Unfortunately, quad bike riders take this careless attitude with them on to the roads where they endanger not just themselves, but others.
If our roads were empty of other traffic, if quad bikes sales were regulated, if helmets were given to each rider, if age limits were imposed, if a training course was essential to buying a quad bike then it would be different.
Simply put, quad bike riders should be subject to the same laws and regulations that govern other drivers. With one major exception. A quad bike should only be ridden in the desert under strict supervision. They are simply too dangerous for young riders and even experienced hands have difficulty controlling them.
The UAE prides itself, rightly so, on its image as a place of modernity. This image must not be tarnished by the sight of quad bike riders spreading confusion on our roads, placing their lives and others at risk.
