Gulf News reader Shias Seddiq said he was appalled to witness the lengths people go to, in order to find a shortcut.

The situation is getting “ridiculous” in Muroor Road, Abu Dhabi, according to the community reporter.

He said: “Every time the municipality sets up fences like [the one in the photograph], they get demolished by some people. This particular broken barrier is very close to the pedestrian signal — yet, someone out there has taken the wrong way out. I know it gets hot in the summer, but is walking an additional 10 metres to a safe crossing just too much to ask?”

Seddiq suggested introducing harsher penalties as a way to discourage jaywalking and misuse of public property.
