Maternity heroes from Jordan, Iran, India talk about caring for babies, mothers
Dubai: The UAE welcomed a bundle of Eid Al Adha babies, bringing joy to families across the nation. While gynaecologists are often in the spotlight during such moments, Gulf News turns the focus to the dedicated midwives quietly working behind the scenes.
Behind every newborn’s first cry and every mother’s breath of relief, there’s a midwife offering comfort, confidence and care. Three passionate women from different corners of the world spoke how each of them is transforming lives – one birth at a time – at Dubai Health facilities.
For Sabreen Wahbeh, midwifery is far more than a profession, it’s a deep-seated passion rooted in respect for women’s strength during childbirth.
“I chose midwifery because I deeply respect the strength and resilience of women during childbirth. Supporting mothers through one of the most powerful and emotional moments in life is something I feel truly passionate about. Midwifery, to me, is not just a profession – it is a calling,” said Sabreen, a Registered Midwife at Latifa Hospital.
Sabreen, who hails from Jordan, values the supportive and collaborative environment at Dubai Health. “I am proud to be part of a team that promotes quality care, empowers women, and blends clinical excellence with human compassion. Each day, I feel the impact of our work in the lives of the families we serve.”
Iranian midwife Shahrzad Sharifi knew from early on that she wanted to dedicate her life to women’s well-being. Midwifery, she discovered, was the perfect path.
“To fulfil my long-time aspiration to serve women, I chose midwifery as my profession. I believe women deserve to have someone by their side to give them confidence and comfort during their life-changing journey. The impact of a skilful and compassionate midwife is a lifelong memory for women and their families,” noted Shahrzad, a Registered Midwife at Dubai Hospital.
She has thrived in her midwifery career by taking on diverse roles.
“I was privileged to develop my midwifery profession in three different dimensions: as a clinical midwife, a mentor for midwifery students and a unit manager,” said Shahrzad, who is also a certified trainer in obstetric emergencies.
For Vandana Vasudevan, midwifery is a fast-paced, purpose-filled profession where no two days or births are the same.
“Midwifery allows me to work in a fast-paced environment where new lives are transformed daily and every birth is unique. Being part of a family’s joyous moment is incredibly rewarding,” said Vandana, who hails from India.
As Staff Nurse 3 - Team Leader in the Labour and Delivery Unit at Latifa Hospital, Vandana is proud of the way Dubai Health blends innovation with compassion.
“Dubai Health emphasises patient-centered care and stays up to date with the latest research, following evidence-based practices in labour and delivery,” she said, highlighting how this commitment ensures the safest and most supportive experience for every mother and baby.
