Germany's Heidelberg is expanding its presence in the Gulf, which recorded a revenue increase of 38 per cent for the company during 2001.

"This region is enjoying big growth with total revenues amounting to euro 144 million," said Dr. Joachim Englisch, regional managing director.

Prompted by the growth, Heidelberg has set up a joint venture in Saudi Arabia to look after the entire Middle East. It has now opened an office in Abu Dhabi.

"Our business growth demands an office in Abu Dhabi in addition to the two we have in Dubai," he said. The company is also venturing into Iraq shortly.

A 30 per cent growth is projected for the Middle East this year, while the Gulf markets will post 50 per cent growth in sales. "Our market share is around 75 per cent in the UAE, excluding the newspaper segment."

At least 40 printing presses in the Gulf are supplied by Heidelberg. Although the electronic media is growing faster than the print, digital printing machines are catching on in this region.
