Al Ain: Doctors here have successfully removed the cataract-affected lens from a patient's eye using Malyugin Ring, a new micro-surgery technology, in Al Ain Hospital.

It was one of the first times a UAE hospital used this technology, said George Jepson, the CEO of Al Ain Hospital, noting that it was a challenging case as the patient was diabetic along with having other complications.

Cataract is an eye condition in which the lens becomes progressively opaque. "It was a difficult case, due to many complications and we … are proud that we have successfully removed the cataract using a new device for the first time in the UAE," said the hospital's CEO.

Malyugin Ring is a squarish temporary implant with four circular loops that hold the iris at equidistant points during the entire procedure. The device provides the surgeon the space required to reach and remove the cataract-affected lens.

The device is named after Dr Boris Malyugin of Russia, who designed it to enhance the ease of conducting surgery in complicated non-dilating or small pupil cases.

Professor Gerard Schwab, the Medical Director of Al Ain Hospital, said this was a difficult cataract case with rigid non-dilating pupil. "It was made even more complicated as the patient was suffering from proliferative diabetic retinopathy, a damage caused to retina by prolonged ill-effects of diabetes," he said.
