Sharjah: A 95-year-old man suffering from a prostate condition has been saved through a rare laser prostatectomy conducted at the Urinary Tract Section of the University Hospital Sharjah’s Urology Department.

The patient, who failed to receive correct diagnosis and treatment at other medical centres, was admitted to hospital where he underwent numerous medical tests and procedures. He was discharged from the hospital in less than 24 hours after the surgery was performed.

“This surgery was a great challenge due to numerous restrictions including the age of the patient, anaesthesia difficulties, and post-operation complications — the decision to perform this surgery was taken after every necessary measure was taken,” said Prof Dr Mohammad Rajae, Urology Consultant at the hospital.

Before the surgery, urinary catheterisation was used for five days for the treatment, and physiological salt solutions were used during the laser prostatectomy procedure to accelerate recovery.

“The preparations were excellent, and the operation was performed using partial anaesthesia following a thorough study of the analysis reports,” explained Dr Rajae.

The procedure helped to remove the prostate within half an hour — without bleeding or usual complications, added Dr Rajae, pointing out that the patient was sent home the same day.
