Abu Dhabi: The sixth scientific committee meeting of the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (Adfca) ended in Abu Dhabi after participants resolved to enhance risk-based inspection systems for imported and local foodstuffs.

It was also recommended that the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) food safety system be implemented, especially in the catering sector, in consultation with the private sector.

The HACCP system is a preventive approach to food safety and pharmaceutical safety that addresses physical, chemical, and biological hazards as a means of prevention rather than finished product inspection.

It was also recommended that there be the formulation of specific action plans to enhance consumer awareness, aiming at behavioural change among residents for better food safety.

Rasheed Al Shariqi, Adfca Director-General, highlighted the importance of international best practices as suggested by participants at the scientific meeting.

Dr Mariam Harb Al Yousuf, the executive director for policy and regulation, reported on key achievements and progress made since the last scientific committee meeting was held last November.

The recommendations also stressed the importance of multi-functionality in agriculture and its role in promoting food security.

It also recommended the implementation of automated agricultural expert application for key crops within the emirate.

The committee highlighted the importance of using agricultural patterns optimising water use.

It also resolved to expand palm planting and introduce saline-resistant agricultural crops for arid lands.
