Dubai. Gulf News videographer Sunita Menon was one of the recipients at the 11th International Women’s Day Excellence Awards 2012.

Upon receiving the award she said she was humbled. “I am sharing space with some of the most illustrious women like Dr Zulekha Daud whose contribution to the society is immense. Through my field [journalism], I have reached out to the common man.”

Menon, whose industry experience spans two decades, explained that she is only a “medium. Whenever I have told someone’s story – whether it is about a woman being duped, or whose passport has been stolen, or is oppressed at work, my source has been the common man. But it has been his or her courage and faith to trust a newspaper that made it possible for me to tell their story.”

The recognition was Menon’s third award. In the past, she has received Best Crime Reporter Award by the Sharjah Police and the Overseas Indian Cultural Award.
Sunita Menon, who started out as a reporter, won Excellence award.
