Dubai: Around 700 four-wheel drives were flagged off on Friday morning for the 31st Gulf News Overnighter Fun Drive after an early morning check-in at Mafraq Hotel, Abu Dhabi.

The much-awaited event is being held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Western Region.

In its 26th year (the event was held more than once on some years), the event will see participants driving in the Liwa region once again. More than 2,400 participants will drive the 300-kilometre route.

The registration for the fun drive closed on the second day with hundreds more on the waiting list.

Home to some of the world's largest megabarchan (large compound arc-shaped) dunes and the country's highest — the Moreeb Dune — the Liwa region will definitely fascinate the fun drivers. But this year's route is a very technical one hence extreme care is required from the participants.

Concentration

"The route this year has some spectacularly scenic views and is mostly on sand. It is however a route that will require total concentration and care and I would like to request you to drive prudently and remember that this event is not a race," said Duleep George, executive director, marketing and sales at Gulf News.

According to the route notes, 95 per cent of the route will be on sand and gravel tracks. Hence, both driver and navigator are required to give 100 per cent concentration to have a hassle-free ride.

"Some areas are very tough, so we encourage everyone to drive safely," Saliya Jayaweera, assistant route director, told Gulf News. But however focused the drivers are, Jayaweera said they must not miss the scenic views on the route.

"Sections 4, 5, and 6 will offer a very beautiful view. The dunes are very nice and naturally high," he added. Around 75 highly experienced marshals will drive with the fun drivers to assist them and guide them. Over 300 Gulf News personnel will be part of the event to man checkpoints and take charge of all the logistics. After the day-long drive, participants will be treated to a sumptuous dinner tonight in the camp courtesy of the Mafraq Hotel.

Entertainment

Camel rides, balloon benders, and magic shows await the kids in the evening while adults may enjoy various performances such as broadway and belly dancing, and karaoke competition.

Specially packed goodie bags will also be given to each of the participating cars.

Participants may join the following morning's yoga session after breakfast before heading home.
