Dubai: The UAE Consulate in New York has issued a warning to Emiratis living in Florida as a major hurricane is expected to hit the East Coast on Thursday night.

The Open Doors 2016 report, recently published by the Institute of International Education (IIE), shows that the number of Emirati high school graduates pursuing higher studies in the US grew in the 2014-15 academic year, up 3.4 per cent from the previous year – the fifth consecutive year of growth.

In the 2014-2015 academic year, 2,878 UAE nationals were enrolled at US institutions of higher education.

After lashing Haiti and Cuba in the Caribbean, Hurricane Matthew is moving on a northwesterly track that, said weather forecasters, has put the mega storm on a collision course with the eastern coast of Florida by nightfall.

President Barack Obama said in a televised broadcast that the storm is considered “serious”.

Weather authorities said that Matthew is expected to bring a storm surge of at least two metres when it strikes near Jacksonville, according to the latest predictions.

In a series of tweets, the UAE Consulate warned Emiratis to stay tuned to weather updates on the hurricane, which has been classified as a Category 4 hurricane.
