Dubai: A Dubai based nursery is capable of producing 200 million seedlings used for landscaping in the emirate. 

The announcement was made during the visit of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Thursday to Dubai Municipality’s Plants and Flowers Nursery. 

The largest agricultural nursery in the UAE is spread over an area of 36 hectares in Warsan.

During his visit, Shaikh Mohammad toured different facilities, including the tissue laboratory and was briefed about its capacity and the process of production. He also visited the main nursery, which is operated by an electronic system with a total annual production capacity of 200 million seedlings.

Greenhouses

Shaikh Mohammad was also introduced to mechanisms of moving seedlings from covered docks to containers in order to plant them in public streets.

He also toured the nursery‘s greenhouses spread over an area of 10,000 square meters and was briefed about cultivation of flower plants which do not grow in outdoor spaces due to hot climatic conditions.

He continued touring the nursery in his car where he viewed the shaded area that is used to produce trees and shrubs. Shaikh Mohammad was briefed by Eng Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, on the municipality’s strategy to cover vast areas of Dubai with green spaces.

Lootah pointed out that Warsan nursery meets the UAE’s needs of flowers through it’s the huge capacity where it can produce 70 million seedlings per round and by operating two rounds it can produce 140 million seedlings. Around 40 million seedlings are used by the municipality while the rest are sold to people.

Shaikh Mohammad expressed satisfaction on the municipality’s efforts made in this field, especially by using latest and most advanced technologies.
