Dubai and Sharjah have joined Abu Dhabi in declaring a salary increase for government employees.

Acting on the directives of His Highness Shaikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister, yesterday ordered the basic salaries of UAE nationals working in Dubai Government departments be increased by 25 per cent effective May 1.

He hoped the raise will contribute to improving the living standards of national employees. He also ordered every government department to study the cases of all expatriate employees working in the public sector.

Shaikh Mohammad expressed gratitude to President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and to Shaikh Maktoum, for their keenness to provide a decent life to residents.

His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, also ordered a salary hike for local government employees in Sharjah emirate.

Effective May 1, civilian and military personnel working in local government departments will see UAE nationals receive a 25 per cent increase and non-UAE nationals a 15 per cent raise.

Official statistics meanwhile indicated the annual amount for salaries for employees of Abu Dhabi Government and federal institutions will be Dh12.48 billion against Dh10.72 billion at present.
