Sharjah: A total of 279 citizens filed nominations across nine different constituencies ahead of the Sharjah Consultative Council elections (SCC) to be held late in January, it was announced on Sunday.
Out of the total registrations, 200 nomination requests were approved by the Higher Committee for Sharjah Consultative Council election (HCSCCE).
The preliminary list of candidates showed that 157 of the candidates are men and 43 of them are women. The largest number of registrations was in Sharjah city with 96 candidates filing nominations. Women made up the biggest group of candidates from Sharjah city.
The Sharjah Consultative Council elections will take place over two days from January 30-31.
Dr Khalid Al Midfa, Head of the Media Committee for SCC Elections, said the committee held meetings on December 30 and 31, 2015 to examine the nomination requests referred to it by the committees of the nine constituencies in the Sharjah. He confirmed that the HCSCCE inspected each request separately to verify its conformity with all the conditions set by the law on the establishment of the SCC and the decree on the regulation of SCC polls.
“A total of 79 requests were excluded from the nine constituencies for several reasons,” he said. “These included non-conformity to the conditions required by the law on the establishment of the SCC, the existence of a criminal record, non-issuance of a good conduct certificate due to delayed submission of request, and the submission of an invalid good conduct certificate or one that is not addressed to the HCSCCE.”
Based on the statistics shared, it showed that 72 of the approved candidates were below the age 40 and 120 of them were between the age group of 40 to 60. Only eight of the approved candidates were above the age of 60.
Those who had nominated themselves came from different education levels. Around 141 of the approved candidates came from a high educational background, 49 were reported to have studied up to intermediate level and only 10 were without a high school degree.
The decision to hold the elections in Sharjah came after His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, announced that the Sharjah Consultative Council (SCC) would see half of its 42 members elected in the upcoming term while the rest of the members would be appointed by the Ruler.
The Committee lauded everyone who answered the call of Shaikh Sultan and submitted a nomination request for the SCC polls, which they said reflects the level of awareness enjoyed by citizens.
The Committee also declared that the window for submitting appeals against candidates, in accordance with the terms and conditions specified by the Emiri decree No. 59 for the year 2015 on the regulation of the SCC elections and its amendments, would be open through Monday and Tuesday (January 4 and 5, 2016). The committee stipulated that the appeals be submitted to the committees of the nine constituencies in the emirate.
