Ras Al Khaimah: An Emirati girl died on the spot on Monday afternoon after she was crushed between a shop wall and an elevator at a commercial outlet in Ras Al Khaimah.

Colonel Abdullah Ali Al Munkis, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department at Ras Al Khaimah Police, said the five-year-old victim, identified as Sh.M., was pinned between the elevator and the wall of one of the unnamed outlet at Faisal Road in the emirate. He said the victim was accompanied by her mother and her aunt.

Police investigations revealed that the elevator is allocated to carry goods to the upper floor only and not for the use of customers.

By the time the police reached the scene, the victim was already dead.

The incident was reported to the police at 12pm. A team from the police station, headed by Colonel Al Munkis, and civil defence workers removed the collapsed elevator to pull out the girl’s body.

The body was transferred to the hospital. Police are still investigating the cause of the elevator collapse.

Col Al Munkis expressed regret over the incident. Police stressed the importance of reporting accidents to authorities as soon as possible and allowing trained officials to carry out rescue and recovery operations to prevent loss of lives.

Col Al Munkis urged shopkeepers to put the elevator and escalator for goods far away from customers to prevent lives being put at risk.
