More than 100 students from 37 government and private schools and 13 teaching and administrative staff were honoured by Dr Ali Abdul Aziz Al Sharhan, Minister of Education and Youth, while celebrating the 16 session of the Ministry's Future Day for the last academic years.

The competition was conducted by the ministry in the last academic year under the theme 'The Future of Education is Quality and Innovation'.

The competitions covered religious, sports, cultural, psychological, theatre, literature, arts and social areas and were aimed at discovering talents and innovative capabilities of students and the administrative and teaching staff.

Held at the Cultural Palace in Sharjah, the ceremony highlighted distinguished talents and skills of the students.

Dr Ahmad Sa'ed Al Sharif, the ministry's Undersecretary for Educational Activities Care Affairs, said that the school is no more just a place where students receive information and knowledge in this era.

"The role of the school has developed and changed into an institution that cares and provides students with values and skills."

The Educational Activities Competitions is one of the means adopted by the ministry to achieve its goals within a comprehensive educational system. The competitions aim to inculcate in students with positive values and to instill in them skills in different fields, he said.

The ministry, following the wise directions of the President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and Their Highnesses, Members of the Supreme Council and Rulers, give high priority to education for national development. Programmes and plans are adopted to achieve continuous development in human resources sector.

The contests offer students with the necessary atmosphere for honourable competition, challenge and an opportunity to prove themselves and their capabilities.

"Competitions stimulate a student's skill and talent and prepares him to excel in different fields of life."

The competitions embody the ministry's Vision 2020 plan that hopes to prepare a distinguished generation capable of dealing with the global changes.

The winners proved that developing the quality of the educational process, interacting with other educational institutions and taking part in international competitions, is an important strategic objective set by the ministry and has a national dimension, he said.

However, this achievement is apart from the competitions' objective which also aims to shape the character of students.

"Education of a student is the concern of the different sectors of the society and was embodied by the generous support the ministry received from different establishments," added Al Sharif.

Mohammed Yousef Al Shehi, student of Al Rams Secondary School in Ras Al Khaimah, said on behalf of the winners that the competition promoted a desire to learn and excel.

"We are proud that we live in a country that gives high priority to investing in youth and accordingly preparing them to lead the future."

Apart from honouring the winners, Dr Al Sharhan awarded the judges, and establishments for supporting the competitions.
