Hostages in good health, say envoys
Foreign diplomats allowed inside the occupied American embassy in Tehran said the hostages they had seen appeared to be in good health. As the diplomats entered the embassy, they were jostled and jeered by demonstrators demanding the return of the deposed Shah of Iran from the United States to face trial.

Fujairah gets a modern telephone exchange
The most advanced telephone exchange was opened in Fujairah by His Highness Shaikh Hamad Bin Mohammad Al Sharqi, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Fujairah. The exchange, built at a cost of Dh12 million, will have an initial capacity of 3,000 lines which can be increased to 10,000.

Deportation for Arab mayor
Israeli authorities jailed the influential Arab mayor of Nablus in the occupied West Bank while the government prepared a legal case aimed at deporting him. Reaction was swift in the West Bank after Mayor Basaam Shaka was taken to a maximum security prison. The Nablus town council resigned and other mayors consulted on a possible mass resignation.

UDI bell silenced
For the first time in 14 years, the independence bell will not ring out defiantly to commemorate the day Rhodesia rebelled against Britain. The officially-approved celebrations of past years seemed to Black politicians in the five-month-old biracial government of Bishop Abel Muzorewa to be an unfitting celebration of White supremacy and the day has been struck from the list of public holidays.

Iran jobless invade Labour Ministry
Islamic Revolutionary Guards fired their rifles into the air as several hundred jobless Iranians stormed the Ministry of Labour shouting. "We want work, Give us work."

Israel airport boycott begins
The Arab Civil Aviation Council announced a boycott of all airlines using the East Jerusalem airport of Kalandia in the Israeli occupied West Bank of the River Jordan. The boycott will extend to a refusal of permission by Arab governments to these airlines to overfly Arab territory or land at Arab airports, the council said.

Mandela wins Nehru prize
Nelson Mandela, a Black civil rights leader in South Africa, was named the 1979 winner of the Jawaharlal Nehru award, Indian Vice-President Mohammad Hidayatullah announced. The award, worth about $12,000, was given to Mandela for his support to African liberation struggles.

Iran asks for Security Council meeting
Iranian Foreign Minister Abolhassan Bani-Sadr called for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council because of what he said was an atmosphere of war against Iran in the United States.
