Army chief killed in Ghana coup
GHANA'S Army Commander, Brigadier Neville Odartey-Wellington, was killed in coup, which ousted General Fred Akuffo's military government. The brigadier was among several members of the armed forces who died in the uprising led by Flight-Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings.
Iran protests Iraqi air raid
IRAN'S provisional government has protested to neighbouring Iraq over an air raid on three Iranian villages in which it said six people died.

All Iran banks nationalised
IRAN announced it had nationalised all the country's private banks, whose foreign debts are estimated at about one billion dollars. But the takeover, made public by Prime Minister Mahdi Bazargan, was seen by many foreign bankers here as improving prospects for repayment of outstanding loans.Surprise from Voyager

'Spy of the century' Gehlen has died
REINHARD Gehlen, whose death was announced, worked for Hitler, US Intelligence and the West German government in a 36-year espionage career in which he built up a reputation as the "spy of the century". He has employed between 4,000 and 20,000 spies, many of them ex-Nazis, some pretty young girls used to seduce Red Army officers.
World Cup cricket starts
THE West Indies, England, Pakistan and New Zealand won their preliminary World Cup matches easily and there were no upsets on the first day. The West Indies showed a glimpse of their real power in crushing India at Birmingham to win by 9 wickets.June 11
Shaikh Zayed inaugurates asbestos plant
PRESIDENT His Highness Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan inaugurated the asbestos plant in Umm Al Quwain. The inauguration was attended by a number of Rulers, Ministers, members of the Arab and Foreign diplomatic corps and other dignitaries.
Non-aligned countries condemn US
A 25-nation meeting of the non-aligned movement ended with a strong condemnation of United States policy in the Middle East.June 13
Trade Centre move begins
THE big move-in to the prestigious Dubai International Trade Centre begins this week. The first companies to shift their offices are Oiltools International Limited and Trade Centre Management Company. The two firms move their offices to level ten and level four respectively.
