Relations between Iraq and Iran plummet to zero
RELATIONS between Iraq and Iran have sunk to their lowest ebb for years with a blistering Iraqi attack on the men who succeeded the ousted Shah. The newspaper of Iraq's ruling Ba'ath Party accused the Iranian leaders of pursuing regional designs over the Arabian Gulf and said they were playing with fire.

Brezhnev and Carter meet
US President Jimmy Carter and Soviet Leader Leonid Brezhnev met for the first time at the start of their four-day summit in Vienna. After a quick introduction in a gilded reception room of Austria's 13th-century imperial palace, the Hofburg, they chatted for several minutes before joining Austrian President Rudolf Kirchschlaeger.
Cigarette advertising banned
THE Dubai Municipality has imposed a ban on all types of advertisements of cigarettes in newspapers and magazines. Dubai is the second emirate, following Abu Dhabi, to impose a ban on the advertising of cigarettes.

Ghana's former head of state executed
GHANA'S new rulers executed former head of state Ignatius Acheampong after putting him on trial before a people's revolutionary court. The 47-year-old ex-army general faced a firing squad just two days after a report that he had given his backing to the group of junior officers who seized power in a coup on June 4.

UN troops barred from entering Israel
UNITED Nations troops in South Lebanon will be barred from entering Israel, following the arrest of a senior UN officer suspected of smuggling arms into this country for Palestinian fighters.
June 19
SALT sealed with a kiss
US President Jimmy Carter and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev ended their first summit by signing a new treaty limiting their strategic missile arsenals and promptly sealed the agreement with a kiss. As they shook hands after the ceremony in a baroque ballroom of Vienna's 13th-century imperial palace, they surprised their two delegations and hundreds of reporters with the unexpected embrace.
Iraq and Syria bent on full merger
PRESIDENT Hafez Al Assad of Syria and Ahmad Hassan Al Baqer of Iraq appear to be bent on the full merger of their countries after dismissing the idea of a federal or confederal union. Assad arrived in Baghdad and has already had a series of talks with President Al Baqer and his top aide Saddam Hussain.

Viljoen elected South African President
MARAIS Viljoen was elected President of South Africa in succession to John Vorster who resigned over the "slush funds" scandal two weeks ago. Viljoen, 63, candidate of the ruling National Party, won 155 votes in an electoral college composed of both houses of Parliament.
