Sharjah: Rainy weather was a contributing factor in accidents across the country yesterday, said authorities, including a tragic single-vehicle crash that took the lives of four people here early Thursday.
Sharjah police said roads were slippery when a vehicle went out of control on Al Madam-Al Dhaid Road and collided with a lamp post leading to the deaths of three Emiratis, two of them brothers, and a fourth victim from Oman.
The victims were identified as Saleh M.S.,28, and his brother Saeed .M.S.,21, M.A.R.,18, and the fourth victim from Oman H.S.S.,24.
Colonel Saif Mohammad Al Ziri, Director of Eastren Region Police Directorate said the Emirati’s vehicle slipped on the wet road as it was raining at the time and the vehicle overturned several times before hitting a lamp post.
Sharjah Police received a report at 2.15am that people were trapped inside. Three were pronounced dead while the fourth victim was moved to Al Dhaid Hospital where he died after short time.
Colonel Al Ziri urged motorists to take special care driving during inclement weather to avoid injury.
More rain, meanwhile, is expected today (FRIDAY) but mostly in coastal areas as fresh warnings are issued for motorists and seafarers.
The sea in the Arabian Gulf is likely to be moderately rough but could get very rough due to freshening winds.
“We warn weekend joyriders to stay away from sea trips in small vessels,” a forecaster said.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms hit the UAE capital and its surrounding areas at around 9am yesterday.
People were seen enjoying the overcast weather but motorists suffered on wet, slippery, and waterlogged streets in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and some areas in the eastern emirates.
“Conditions would still be tough for motorists as we expect a rise in humidity with chances of late night and early morning fog in some areas,” the forecaster said.
According to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), weather will be partly cloudy during the weekend.
Conditions will be very cold in some inland and mountainous areas and there are chances of fog forming.
