Fire hits busy UAE Ramadan market

Fujairah: The quick response of Fujairah Civil Defence averted certain disaster after a fire broke out in a busy Ramadan market in Fujairah on Thursday evening.

At least one shop was gutted but no injuries were reported , Brigadier Ali Al Tunaiji, Director General of Fujairah Civil Defence, told Gulf News on Thursday.

This year the market is situated near Heritage Village in Fujairah, he said, although it usually takes place on the Corniche. The market is known for its traditional UAE food.

The operation room received a call at 6pm reporting the incident, Brig. Al Tunaiji said.

A Civil Defence team was already stationed at the crowded market. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control.

Brig. Al Tunaiji said that before the market started, civil defence officials trained market staff in how to deal with fire and how to use fire extinguishers, which helped in control the blaze.
