Dubai: A female cyclist was killed on Wednesday night after a speeding car knocked her down on Meydan Road in Dubai.

Social media users in the UAE took to Twitter to offer their condolences to the family of Maznah Abdullah, who was an avid participant of the Al Wathba cycling team.

The accident took place when Maznah was cycling with her colleagues as they trained for the Ramadan Nad Al Sheba (NAS) Tournament.  

The annual NAS Sports Tournament runs from May 17 to June 6, and is held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council (DSC).

The Emirati victim was killed after a speeding car crossed over the yellow line of the road, and ran her over. 

Fans of the Al Wathba cycling team posted the funeral prayer on its Instagram account on Thursday, as the victim was laid to rest.

The driver of the vehicle, a Gulf national, was detained for questioning.
