The emirate of Umm Al Quwain has always been somewhat of a mystery to us. Geographically located north of Ajman, it is situated on a sand spit in the Arabian Gulf Coast. So, we set off to find something interesting to do in this unassuming town.

Driving towards Sharjah city from Dubai World Trade Centre, we approached the Sharjah International Airport flyover but took the Wasit Square Roundabout below it in the direction of Umm Al Quwain. Passing Ajman Convention Centre, we caught glimpses of the blue creek amidst the industrial area. At 45 kms, we reached an elliptical intersection with a sign indicating a left turn for UAQ city. Directing the Chrysler LHS towards the port, we passed by the Electricity, Al Kuwait, and Al Dwan roundabouts until Khor Umm Al Quwain came into view.

What seemed to be a fishing village appeared on the right. Small dhows with maritime equipment docked on the creek, cows sauntered by and a few fishermen huddled around their huts. As we ventured towards the old town, it occurred to us that this was how Dubai must have been like in the past.

"Why are all these buildings broken?" asked our inquisitive seven-year-old. Sure enough, the town seemed to have been untouched in decades. Dilapidated dwellings and rubble surrounded us. We found a run-down cinema, closed to spectators for quite some time. BR>
