Women artists from 24 countries around the world are sharing their thoughts and ideas in an art extravaganza in Sharjah.

The exhibition, Women in Art, in Peace and in War, is being conducted by the Sharjah Ladies Club and runs until February 2.

The exhibition, which is being held for the third time, has attracted artists from countries including Austria, the United States, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Canada, Bangladesh, Syria, Japan, Palestine and Sri Lanka.

"The exhibition is not a competition, it is for women artists to come together and share their thoughts and ideas," said Shaikha Bodour Bint Mohammad Al Qasimi, vice-president of Sharjah Ladies Club.

She added Sharjah was globally renowned as the cultural capital of the Arab world and staging this art exhibition gave UAE women an opportunity to meet and interact with international artists.

"It is our privilege to have renowned female artists from so many countries participating in this event which we are confident will give a boost to the emirate's reputation as a centre for cultural excellence in the Arab world," she said.

She added the exhibition's title reflects the fact that some countries are in a state of war and women from countries which are not sometimes feel as if they are living in a war-torn country.

"The exhibition provides art lovers with a first-hand view of a multicultural, multi-dimensional and inspiring array of creativity and self-expression that is breathtaking in its scope and variety. The exhibition is the first in an exciting series of events planned for this year by the club," she added.
