Equipment to inspect pearls
The Central Laboratory of Dubai Municipality has installed new equipment to inspect pearls and provide certificates.
Abdullah Yousef, Supervisor of the Gems and Precious Metals Laboratory Unit, said the equipment is the first of its kind in the Middle East.
"There is a similar machine in Bahrain, but the one we have purchased is more advanced," he said. Previously, traders tested whether the pearl was natural by biting it.
"With the new machine, traders as well as customers will be able to find out if the pearl is natural easily. They will also receive official certificates describing the quality of the pearl," he said.
Yousef said the laboratory has installed the machines, but services are yet to be provided to traders and customers.
"We have just received the new machines, and we are examining them. I believe that we will extend the service by next month," he said.
According to Yousef, the demand for such a service will be very high, and it will facilitate pearl traders.
