The Emirates Environment Group (EEG) has become the first UAE non-government organisation to receive ISO 14001 certification. The ISO 14000 series is the environment standardisation process for organisations engaged in protecting the environment. It looks into areas like pollution and other environmental hazards caused by commercial activity.
This recognition gives the EEG a stronger voice for its concern for a cleaner environment and strengthens its battle against pollution. Chairperson Habiba Al Marashi said, "For over ten years, the EEG has been setting new standards for itself and has commendable achievements in spreading environmental awareness among the communities of Dubai and the UAE.
"This year it set another goal - to become an ISO 14001 certified organisation. I am proud to announce that we have reached this milestone. We have been bestowed with the ISO 14001 certification and have become a pioneer among NGOs worldwide for being ISO 14001 certified.
"This makes our position stronger in our efforts to campaign for a clean and pollution-free environment. If we preach something, then it is better to practice it. We have been practising this for the last ten years, but now have the recognition."
She said her organisation will set up a cell to advise commercial organisations on ISO 14000 certification. "This cell should begin operation in September and will undertake training programmes for commercial organisations and industries, in collaboration with the Global Training Centre at Emirates Bank International." She said her organisation might take up the role of issuing authority of ISO 14000 certificates for the industry.
"We want to expand our role in giving all types of support to the communities in making the environment cleaner and healthier. We are open to taking any responsibility that will improve the environment. The sky is the limit."
