Dubai: A 19-year-old Emirati man was killed in a traffic accident on Friday night, after losing control of his vehicle on one of Dubai’s busiest highways.

Colonel Saif Al Mazroui, director of the traffic department at Dubai Police, told the Arabic daily newspaper Emarat Al Youm that the incident occurred on Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road as the motorist was heading towards Sharjah.

“The man was  identified as Abdulla Hassan [who lived in Ajman], and was killed when his car collided into the concrete road barrier. Forensic experts are investigating the case to determine the technical cause of the accident,” said Col. Al Mazroui.

The perils of driving recklessly has become a main priority for law enforcers, as in the last year alone, authorities have impounded 81 cars that were involved in illegal street racing and stunt driving.

In a statement, Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, said that motorists had removed their car plates to remain anonymous, and that the majority of incidents took place in the areas of Al Aweer and Ras Al Khor.

He also said that police officers risked their lives while trying to seize the speeding vehicles.

As the reckless drivers did not use their headlights, according to the chief of Dubai Police, they also posed as a safety risk to other motorists as well.

"Many of the cars were speeding at over 300km/h, and did not consider the possibility of skidding and crashing into another car,” said Maj. Gen. Al Mazeina.
