Abu Dhabi: The Emirates Red Crescent announced yesterday that 13,000 parcels of relief materials were packed by volunteers who turned up in large numbers in response to the Tarahum- for Gaza “Compassion for Gaza” campaign call under the auspices of the UAE Red Crescent on Sunday.

Rashid Al Mansouri, Deputy Secretary-General for Local Affairs at the Emirates Red Crescent, said: “Over 13,000 parcels were prepared on the first day of the campaign, which will continue across the Emirates during the coming days and for several weeks.”

The ERC launched the massive relief campaign at the Abu Dhabi Ports Hall to provide aid to Palestinians impacted by the war in the Gaza.

The campaign’s activities began at 9 am and continued until 4pm.

Since morning, hundreds of volunteers from different nationalities and age groups flocked to the Abu Dhabi Ports Hall in Mina Zayed to help mobilise funds and relief materials. The campaign supervisors were compelled to divide the volunteers into several groups to allow everyone to participate in the campaign.

The campaign aims to establish centres to collect and mobilise humanitarian relief packages, with the participation of humanitarian and charitable institutions, volunteer centres, the private sector, all sectors of society in the country, and the media.

The packages included three types: Clothing, children’s packages that had different types of powdered milk, biscuits, health supplies, and food packages. Each food parcel consisted of 14 types of food items, including flour, oil, dates, beans, chickpeas, peas, corn, tuna, canned meat, tea, salt and sugar.

Several families also took the initiative to donate food supplies to Palestinians in Gaza, by handing over their donations to the collection centre in the Abu Dhabi Ports Hall.

Who can help in the campaign and how?
- He or she must be a citizen of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries or a resident of one of these countries.
- Required papers and documents: a personal photo, a copy of a valid passport, the (unified number) page for the UAE citizen or (the residence page) for the resident, a copy of the Emirates ID card from both sides, a license to practice the profession for doctors, nurses and paramedics.

The launch of this campaign comes in cooperation with the World Food Programme and in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Community Development, as part of the humanitarian efforts undertaken by the UAE to provide urgent assistance to the Palestinian people.

The Tarahum - for Gaza “Compassion for Gaza” campaign also aims to show solidarity with Palestinian children and families affected by the ongoing war, work to alleviate the severity of the humanitarian conditions, and alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable groups, especially children, who constitute nearly half of the Gaza Strip’s population (more than one million children). By providing them and their mothers with basic needs, in addition to health supplies and general hygiene materials.

The Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), which will be overseeing the operations , has already listed the details on how the residents can contribute.
