Dubai: In a new video released by Dubai Police on social media, five common mistakes made by delivery riders are highlighted, with a warning that these errors could lead to fatal accidents.

The video aims to raise awareness about road safety, stressing the importance of adhering to traffic rules, especially in a fast-paced city like Dubai. According to Dubai Police, these mistakes not only endanger the lives of the riders but also pose a significant risk to other road users.

1-Violation of lane discipline

One of the most dangerous mistakes delivery riders make is failing to stick to their designated lanes. Proper lane discipline ensures smoother traffic flow and minimises the risk of unexpected collisions. Riders weaving in and out of lanes without signalling or proper observation create unnecessary hazards for themselves and other drivers.

2-Overtaking from the road shoulder

Many delivery riders take the risk of overtaking other vehicles by using the road shoulder. While this may seem like a quick way to get ahead, it not only violates traffic rules but also places riders in situations where they may not be visible to other drivers, significantly increasing the chances of accidents.

3-Using a mobile phone while riding

Using a smartphone while riding — whether checking messages or answering calls — is a common and highly dangerous habit. Distracted riding is a leading cause of accidents worldwide, and taking attention away from the road impairs a rider’s ability to react to sudden changes in traffic or road conditions.

4-Making a wrong U-turn

Making illegal or incorrect U-turns, especially in busy streets, can result in collisions with other vehicles. Since riders may not be visible or may cut across lanes unexpectedly, these maneuvers can endanger not only the rider but also other road users.

5-Making a sudden detour

Riders who make sudden detours or sharp turns without signalling create confusion for other drivers. Such unexpected movements, particularly in high-traffic areas, increase the likelihood of severe accidents. Proper signalling and planning are essential for ensuring safety on the roads.

Police warning

Dubai Police have urged delivery riders to stay focused and follow traffic regulations to avoid tragic accidents. “Some delivery riders commit violations that endanger their own lives and the lives of others,” the police warned. Police reiterated that staying in the designated lanes and adhering to road safety rules are crucial for everyone’s safety on the roads.

Alarming statistics

According to the official statistics, at least18 delivery riders lost their lives in traffic accidents in Dubai in 2024. Additionally, Dubai Police reported over 77,200 traffic violations involving delivery motorcycles, a significant increase from the previous year’s 60,471 violations. The rise in traffic violations underscores the need for greater awareness and adherence to safety protocols.

In the past four years, 181 delivery riders have suffered severe injuries, often due to sudden swerving, distractions, or unsafe overtaking. More than 26,382 motorcycles have been confiscated for traffic violations this year, compared to 12,209 in 2023, and the total number of accidents has increased from 385 to 428.
