Dr Abdullah Mohammed Abdul Kareem El Reyes, head of the Centre for Documentation and Research (National Archives), has been elected president of the Arab Region's Branch of the International Council of Archives (ICA).

The ICA is an umbrella organisation of national archives of countries worldwide. The France-based organisation has 187 members with a strong presence from Arab countries.

In the recently held elections, Dr El Reyes gained 20 votes out of the total 29. The other contestant was from Egypt, and he managed to get only nine votes.

"I believe that's an honour for the UAE and a tribute from fellow Arab member countries to the leadership of the country for their efforts in preserving Arab culture and history," he said.

Dr El Reyes, who earned his doctorate in linguistics, has been working with the National Archives for two years.
