Sharjah: Three people were killed in three separate traffic accidents in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah during the Eid Al Fitr holidays.
The fatal accidents included a crash, a car hitting a pedestrian and a car flipping over.
Two people were killed and two others were injured in 11 road accidents in Sharjah while one person was killed and another injured in a car accident in Ras Al Khaimah.
In Sharjah, a 27-year-old Somali woman was killed and two passengers travelling with her aged 19 and 35 sustained serious and moderate injuries when their car crashed into a shop in Al Ourba Road after veering off a bridge.
The body of the deceased was moved to Al Kuwaiti Hospital and the injured were moved to Al Kuwaiti and Al Qasimi hospitals.
In the second incident, an Indian man was killed after he was run over by a speeding vehicle on Emirates Road between Al Rahmaniya tunnel and Interchange No. 7. The man was crossing the six-lane road.
Colonel Dr Ahmad Saeed Al Naour, deputy director-general of operations at Sharjah Police, said authorities received 24,146 calls, including traffic and criminal reports, over the holidays.
As many as 186 police patrols were deployed on the roads and helped in controlling traffic.
The Central Operations Room received 20,460 calls during Eid Al Fitr holidays through emergency number 999, and 3,686 calls through non-emergency number 901.
Police urged motorists to refrain from careless driving and take special care when driving near residential areas, pedestrian crossings and intersections.
“Raising awareness about correct driving methods through campaigns, workshops and initiatives is among Sharjah Police’s objectives,” Col Al Naour said.
In Ras Al Khaimah, a 23-year-old Asian man was killed and his 28-year-old friend seriously injured after their car driven by the latter flipped and rolled over on Shoka Al Manayi road on Saturday.
The accident was attributed to speeding.
Lieutenant-Colonel Ahmad Mohammad Al Sabah, director of Al Munai’i Comprehensive police station, said police and ambulances were immediately despatched to the scene. Initial investigation showed that the driver lost control over his vehicle and the car went off the road and crashed into a concrete barrier and then overturned.
The accident resulted in the death of the passenger. The driver was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The case was referred to the authorities concerned to complete the necessary legal procedures.
