Dubai: Dubai Municipality launched the “Reading on Beach” initiative, which involves the setting up of libraries on public beaches in Dubai to encourage people to read and make reading a lifelong habit.

The move is in line with the orders of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make 2016 the year of reading.

Engineer Alya Abdul Al Rahim Al Harmoudi, Director of the Environment Department at the Municipality, said, the idea is represented in offering libraries at public beaches in Dubai, especially beaches that attract hundreds of thousands of people annually, making them the ideal destinations that can help realise the leadership’s directives.

She said the initiative aims to bring people and books closer and entertain people who come to beaches in a unique way.

The book cabinets are uniquely designed to attract beach and holidaymakers whether by day or night, as beach libraries are equipped with solar lighting system.
