For the first time in its history, the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination results in the south Indian state of Kerala were announced without assigning ranks to the toppers.
The results were declared by E.T. Mohammad Basheer, Kerala Education Minister, which showed a pass percentage of 58.49 per cent.
This year students were not divided into the conventional passed and failed categories, but given grades ranging from A Plus to E. Only those who have a grade of D Plus and above will be entitled to pursue higher studies.
A total of 469 students were placed in the A Plus category for all the subjects, denoting that they scored over 90 per cent marks in each of the subjects.
"We have become the first state in India to introduce the grading system for the school final examination. We have also set a standard by becoming the first state to have made computer studies a compulsory subject in the school curriculum," the education minister said while announcing the results.
The grading system is likely to be introduced in classes 8 and 9 next year, thus increasing the scope of grading in the Kerala schooling system.
The examination itself had run into controversy after question papers leaked and some of the examinations had to be postponed to make time for printing fresh question papers.
Eighty-five schools including four government schools got all their students eligible for higher education.
The pass percentage for the students who wrote the examination in the old system was 62.66 per cent.
