Dubai: Dan Brown, famed for gripping his readers with sleuth pursuits solving historical cryptographs and symbols with books such as The Da Vinci Code, has been announced as the guest of honour at the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), which begins on November 5.

The American novelist, 50, has sold over 200 million books, which have been translated into over 50 languages. Two of his novels, Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code, have been adapted into movies with American actor Tom Hanks playing the lead character of Robert Langdon.

His mystery thriller, The Lost Symbol, is said to be the next instalment of the movie franchise. His latest novel, Inferno, was on the New York Times Best Seller List for the first 11 weeks of its release.

Robert Langdon has been the central character in the last four of Brown’s six fictional works. Through Langdon, readers have decoded symbols and ambigrams, confronting secrets of Freemasons, the Illuminati, and Mary Magdalene’s relevance in Christianity.

Brown has generated both publicity and controversy with his motifs of conspiracy theories, and theological and historical puzzles. He is set to be the guest of honour at the 33rd edition of the fair and will be speaking about his work at a special event at the Expo Centre in Sharjah on November 6 at 7.30pm.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome Dan Brown to this year’s SIBF, which promises to be bigger and better than ever. Mr Brown’s books continue to enthrall readers from across the globe and we are very happy to be able to offer our visitors the opportunity to meet one of the world’s most brilliant literary minds,” said Ahmad Al Ameri, director of the SIBF.

The 11-day annual book fair aims to develop and maintain a culture of reading within the emirate and the UAE. It is a place where many well-known authors gather and a platform for many exhibitors.

Exciting literary activities

The SIBF provides book lovers the opportunity to acquire their favourite pieces of literature.

It was established in 1982 under an Emiri decree issued by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and has grown to become one of the four biggest book fairs in the world.
