Abu Dhabi: Schoolchildren in the capital will soon be able to plant trees along the Abu Dhabi Corniche, following the grant of a plot of land to the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City.

The allocated plot will be turned into a farm for organic vegetables, and the project will be used to encourage eco-friendly activities like tree-planting and gardening among children, the Adec announced in a statement sent today (Tuesday).

Dr Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, director general at Adec, said that planting is a useful activity for pupils. The activity also supports the Adec’s strategic plan to promote green culture in all its buildings and facilities.

“This initiative aims to educate students and enable them to acquire more knowledge on the importance of agriculture to people as well as to the environment. Additionally, it helps pupils to monitor closely various agricultural processes, such as seeding, harvesting, irrigation,” Dr Al Khaili said.

He added that a number of schools will be selected to monitor and oversee the farm.

Dr Al Khaili also pointed out that Adec is currently developing and expanding school farms across the emirate.
